Healthy Families Start at Home: A Roswell Chiropractor’s Weekend Meal Prep Story

Image
How one busy weekend in the kitchen turned into 17 healthy meals — and a reminder about nervous system health and intentional living. Elevating Family Health One Meal at a Time This weekend my kitchen looked more like a meal prep operation than a normal family kitchen. There were sheet pans in the oven, onions cooking, freezer bags lined up across the counter, and labels everywhere. Nine pounds of ground beef later… I had 17 dinners ready to go in the freezer. As a busy mom and chiropractor serving families here in Roswell, Georgia , I know how quickly weeknights can get hectic. Between kids’ activities, work at the office, and everything else life throws at us, it’s easy for healthy habits to slip. Fast food can start to look like the easiest option. But this weekend I decided to try something different. I planned ahead, cooked everything at once in the oven, portioned it into labeled freezer bags, and created a simple system so dinner during the week can be quick without ...

Elevate Heart Health: How the Spine, Stress, and Nervous System Are Connected

Image
February tends to get all wrapped up in hearts—cards, candy, flowers, and love notes. And while I fully support chocolate as a wellness tool (in moderation 😉), February is American Heart Health Month , which makes it a great time each year to talk about the connection between the heart, stress, and the nervous system. Soup’s On: The Bone Broth Edition

Image
Bone broth is a food that I love to recommend and its a topic that has become more mainstream in recent years.   Today I’m going to share with you why I love making, eating, and recommending bone broth.   My name is Dr Kristen Welsh.   I am a Chiropractor, I am a mom to 2 young children, and I've spent a considerable amount of time healing my gut.   About a decade ago, while I was struggling with gut issues, I discovered (thanks too many great resources, blogs, and colleagues) Bone Broth.   So what exactly is Bone Broth?   It is simply the liquid produced by boiling bones in water.   Virtually any type of bones can be used—I’ve used everything from left over bones from a whole chicken or turkey to beef bones purchased expressly for making broth.   Personally—if we eat food with bones (whole chickens, turkey, bone in steaks & roasts) I will freeze the bones until I’m ready to use them.   Bone broth is different from stock or broth in that ...

Tech Neck

Image
Tech neck is a new name for a condition that’s been around for years—neck pain that is caused by repetitive strain and injury to the muscles and other structures in the cervical spine.   Do you experience neck pain?   Headaches?   Jaw Pain? Pain between your shoulder blades?   Numbness and tingling in your arms or hands?   Reduced mobility of the neck, upper back and shoulders?    Increased pain when tipping your head forward?    Generalized pain in the lower neck, shoulders and upper back?    Sharp, stabbing pain in a one localized spot?   Generalized pain in the lower neck, shoulders and upper back?      If you answered yes to any of these you could be suffering from Tech Neck. Constantly looking at our technology—such as computers, laptops, cell phones—can result in a repetitive stress/strain injury to the cervical spine and it’s supporting structures.   This condition is     c...

Thanksgiving and Pumpkin Pie

As many of you may know, I've been Gluten Free for several years.  To be honest, it has not always been easy—especially for an Italian girl who loves pasta!  However I also know that when I cheat and eat foods I’m not supposed to I get really sick and miserable.   A couple of years ago it was my turn to host Thanksgiving.  No easy task when your family includes a Vegan, a anaphylactic egg/dairy allergy, a soy allergy, and a gluten free child.  To be honest it was daunting—especially since I was used to cooking for 1 not 20!   I also LOVE Pumpkin Pie.  Its a tradition, a staple, a must have.  So I started a search for a Pumpkin Pie recipe that everyone could eat.   And I found one. On Pinterest.  And I made it.   And it was DELICIOUS! The worst part—there wasn't a sliver leftover.  This meant NO Pie for breakfast. (Doesn't everyone eat pie for breakfast? Especially leftover ...

Holiday Tips

Parties, presents, family, and friends...  We are in the middle of the holiday season...  While this time of year is full of reasons for good cheer, the added stress of the season can test the limits of your body.  Research shows that stress and unhealthy lifestyle choices contribute to our nation's health challenges--this includes diabetes, heart disease and obesity.  This same stress can also manifest as headaches, neck and back pain.  A specific chiropractic adjustment can not only alleviate the pain, but it also allows the body to function at 100%.  Throughout this holiday season I will be writing additional posts to help you deal with challenges that often arise during the holiday season.  Please follow my blog so you're sure to get all the tips!  Also, Like Care More Chiropractic on Facebook as additional tips will be posted there.  Enjoy your holiday season!  In Health, Dr. K

Month of Thanks!

I can't believe that's its already November!  I feel like I'm always saying--time is flying by and it seems to keep speeding up!  It's been a busy few months, filled with many blessings...  A marriage, a honeymoon, a fabulous family and the start of a new family, birthday celebrations, the start of school, fall break, Halloween, and now it's Thanksgiving! For those of you on Facebook, you may have seen the "month of thanks" posts.  In the hustle and bustle of life, its easy to forget to be thankful, to stop and smell the roses, to notice the little things all around us.  Gratitude is contagious!  When we start being grateful for what we have we are blessed with more.  Today I posted about being Thankful for Vision.  My husband woke me up because he dropped his glasses and couldn't find them.  I could have been angry or upset that my sleep was disrupted--instead I was thankful that I've always been blessed with the gift of sight.  On...

Thanks Mom!

Time is just flying this year!   May is almost half over and I haven’t posted a single blog about Posture.   Since May is National Perfect Posture Month, I must rectify that! Yesterday was Mother’s Day—I was blessed to be able to spend the day celebrating and honoring all of the favorite “mom’s” in my life with family and friends.   What does Mother’s Day have to do with posture???   I don’t know about you, but growing up, my mom was always saying “Don’t slouch!”—When we were doing our homework, reading or watching T.V.   In fact, I would venture to say that all of us probably heard something about our posture from mom.   Mom was absolutely correct!   Posture is vital to our health and wellness.   However, times have changed!   (I know, a total shock, right?)   Technology (smart phones, iPads, and personal gaming devices) is wrecking havoc on our posture.   I see it all the time in young and old alike—people hunc...

May is Posture Awareness Month!

May is National Posture Awareness Month.   My experience is that every time I say something about “posture” I immediately see a change—people sit up straighter and uncross their legs.   We all know we should have “correct posture” (I still hear mom saying no slouching!) but do you really know why posture is so important?   What is “correct posture?”    How important is my posture???   Are there exercises I can do to help my posture?     During the month of May, watch my Blog for the answers to these questions and more.   Do you have a posture question you’d like to see answered???   Let me know and I will answer your questions! In the meantime—Straighten Up for the health of it!   Dr. K
The American Health Care System is primarily a disease care system.   In 2009, $2.1 trillion dollars was spent in the United States on Medical Care.   This represents 16.5% of the Gross National Product.   Of these trillions of dollars, 95 cents of every dollar was spent to treat disease AFTER it had already occurred.   At least 75% of these dollars were spent on treating chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and obesity.   These can be preventable and even reversible! What can you do to improve your overall health in 2012? 1.      Get Moving!   We all need to be moving—30 minutes per day!   2.      Massage therapy—a great way to keep our bodies limber and reduce stress.   In today’s fast paced world it is necessity!   Ask about our Massage Club!   3.      Improve your nutrition!   Eat more Fresh Fruits and Vegetables—7-9 servings per d...

Neck Pain after A Fall...

In recent years, it has been reported that between 40 % and 60% of the population experienced an episode of neck or back pain in the previous 3 months. The neck has increased flexibility allowing for motion of the head, however this also means that there is decreased stability and protection in the region. The most common causes of neck pain are a result of are injuries to the soft tissue, muscles and ligaments in the neck. This can be caused by traumas such as car accidents, falls, sports injuries and repetitive motions. A chiropractor is trained to determine and correct most causes of Neck pain. Recently a patient slipped and fell on an ice patch as she was leaving work. Within minutes she had severe neck pain and a headache. She missed a couple of days of work when her best friend recommended Care More Chiropractic. I adjusted her neck and the pain subsided; within a week she was pain free! There is no need for people to suffer through neck pain hoping it will go away. Ch...
