Packing Light...

The “wrong” backpack, packing it improperly, or even carrying it “wrong” can lead to poor posture, rounded shoulders, or forward head carriage.  It may also contribute to scoliosis as well as a myriad of symptoms ranging from neck and shoulder pain, headaches, to numbness in the hands and arms.  These issues can lead to improper weight bearing, restricted motion in one direction, and poor balance & coordination.

Carrying a backpack that’s too heavy can cause injury, subluxations and may lead to permanent chronic problems.  Care More Chiropractic recommends regular chiropractic check-ups for kids of all ages to detect ad correct existing problems, as well as to prevent possible future issues.

The doctors at Care More Chiropractic also recommend parents watch for signs of potential problems.  In particular parents should watch for the head tilting to one side, uneven shoulder, forward head carriage, rounded shoulders, poor fitting clothes (clothes that just don't hang right or pant legs that appear uneven), or the appearance of a protrusion of a shoulder.  If you see any of these symptoms, make an appointment to see your Chiropractor at Care More immediately!

Now, let's talk about how to check your child's backpack, weighing it, and making sure your kids know how to pack them properly.

Care More's Packing Tips:

1.  Backpacks should never exceed 15% of your body weight.  (i.e. a 90 pound child should not carry a backpack weighing over 14 pounds)  For kids in elementary school, the backpack should be below 10% of their body weight.*
2.  Distribute the weight evenly in the backpack.
3.  Pack the heaviest items closest to the body.  This reduces strain as weight is closer to the center of gravity of the child.
4.  Do not overload the backpack & only carry items that are needed.
5.  Pack odd shaped items on the outside so they don't dig into your child's back or side.

*If your child is small or they must have all their text books every day and the weight exceeds the above formula, ask Care More Chiropractic about getting a letter asking the school district to provide an extra set (or even just one of the heavier texts) to be kept at home.
